Brussels has rebuilt its Grand-Place before. French artillery under Marshal Villeroy flattened most of the square in August 1695, and the guilds had their houses standing again within about four years (one of the façades still carries the date 1697 in big numerals). The region that governs the city around it needed 613 days after the June 2024 election just to agree on a government. Seven months into that government, one of its own parties has switched off the money for social housing.

My priors first, because they matter for what comes after. I think immigration built the Spain that tourists queue up to photograph, and I think the loudest voices on this subject are usually arguing about something else entirely. When Ted Cruz said the socialist prime minister of Spain was handing amnesty to millions of military-age African men, my instinct was to argue with Cruz, not with Sánchez.

Then came the last two days of July.

Three European Cities Where Architecture and Festival Collide

The best time to visit a European city isn’t when it’s quiet. It’s when the streets are alive with something specific—a ritual so embedded in the place that the architecture seems designed just to frame it.

Wrocław’s Town Hall sits at the center of a square ringed with 600-year-old merchant houses. The Gothic spires and copper roofline aren’t just decoration; they’re a backdrop for a city where cultural life still runs through the calendar year, not just the tourist season. Stand in the square at night and the building does what it’s always done: hold the center while everything around it changes.

Ten recent pieces, grouped by the thread that actually connects them rather than the order they went out. Some of it is procurement, some of it is money, and a surprising amount of it is the same story told at different layers of the stack.

The picture below is a decent illustration of the problem this site keeps circling. Two men stand at a wrought-iron railing above a dense hillside city, backs to the camera, everything in front of them thrown soft by a long lens. One is shooting stills handheld. The other has a Sony video body on a fluid-head tripod, shotgun mic on top, a phone clamped above the monitor, presumably running a second angle or a live feed. Between them they are operating four recording devices pointed at the same view. None of that tells you what is happening down in the streets. It tells you where they were allowed to stand, what focal length they brought, and which slice of the city fits in the frame from that terrace. Open-source work runs on the same constraint. The material is abundant, the vantage point is not neutral, and most of the analytical effort goes into working out what the position itself is excluding.
