Last autumn NBCUniversal was warning its viewers that its channels might go dark on YouTube TV. This July it agreed to put Peacock inside YouTube itself. The distance between those two positions is the most interesting thing about the deal.

The terms, announced on 27 July: beginning in early 2027, ad-supported Peacock Premium will be included with YouTube Premium subscriptions in the United States. Not offered as a discounted add-on, and not sold as a separate channel through the Primetime Channels storefront, but bundled in and integrated into the YouTube viewing experience, so a subscriber reaches the NFL, the Olympics, the NBA, Premier League, Universal films, Love Island USA and the Bravo catalogue without leaving the platform. NBCUniversal calls it the largest wholesale distribution arrangement Peacock has ever done, and on subscriber reach it plainly is.

Nielsen is paying 2.15 billion dollars for DoubleVerify, and if you work anywhere near digital advertising the deal deserves more attention than it’s getting. This is the measurement business buying the verification business. The company that counts the audience is acquiring the company that checks whether the audience was real.

Those two functions were kept apart for a reason, and the reason was never written down anywhere enforceable.

What each side did

Nielsen spent decades as the number everyone agreed to argue about. Panels, ratings, currency. Advertisers and broadcasters both distrusted it, which was roughly the point. A shared referee that annoys both teams equally is doing its job.

OpenAI Is Building an Ad Business That Routes Around Programmatic

OpenAI is building an advertising business, and the notable part isn’t that it’s selling ads. Everyone with attention eventually sells ads. The notable part is that it’s being built to bypass the legacy programmatic networks entirely.

Twenty years of ad tech infrastructure exists to solve one problem: matching a buyer to an audience across millions of sites that the buyer has never heard of. Exchanges, supply-side platforms, demand-side platforms, data management, identity resolution, attribution. Every layer takes a cut, and every layer exists because the audience is scattered.
